Data Types

There are four primary categories of data.

Public – Information intended for broad use within the College community at large or for public use that, when used as intended, would have no adverse effect on the operations, assets, or reputation of the College , or the College’s obligations concerning information privacy and confidentiality.

Internal – Information intended for limited use within the College that, if disclosed, could have an adverse effect on the operations, assets, or reputation of the College. Information designated as Internal would not generally compromise the College’s obligations concerning information privacy and confidentiality.

Sensitive – Information intended for limited use within the College that, if disclosed, could be expected to have a specific and serious adverse effect on the operations, assets, or reputation of the College, or to compromise the College’s obligations concerning information privacy and confidentiality. Access to Sensitive data is restricted based on each user’s scope of control, or role, within the College’s organizational hierarchy.

Highly Sensitive – Information that meets the criteria for sensitive information and which in the judgment of data originators, requires additional oversight and control due to the reputational, financial, or operational impact it may have on the College. Access to Highly Sensitive data is restricted to users with specific authorization from the appropriate Data Steward.
